Gingerbread Cookies

Every year we would bake all kinds of holiday shaped gingerbread cookies.  Then with the table covered in newspaper, and Christmas music on, we would spend an afternoon decorating them.  Then when done we would often give many as gifts or bring them to holiday parties.  Most of the time our decorating is just for fun, it’s more about the memories than it is about the looks. When baking these have the most amazing smell that fills your house and they are just as delicious too!


  • 1/3 cup shortening
  • 1/3 cup packed brown sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 2/3 cup molasses
  • 2 ¾ cups flour
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 2 tsp cinnamon
  • 1 tsp ginger



  1. Mix shortening, brown sugar, egg and molasses
  2. Stir in flour, baking soda, salt, cinnamon and ginger
  3. Chill dough at least 1 hour
  4. Roll dough out ¼ inch thick on lightly flour dusted surface. Dip cookie cutters in flour and then cut the dough into desired shapes.  Place 1 inch apart on a lightly greased cookie sheet.
  5. Bake at 375˚F for 8-10 minutes or until when lightly touched no imprint remains.
  6. Cool and frost with powdered sugar mixed with water and food coloring.
